We breed chickens near Monbulk in the Dandenong Ranges. I choose breeds and plan crosses for the things that matter in a backyard flock: birds you love looking at, hens you enjoy keeping, and eggs of your own.

Young females with much of the early brooding behind them. These take more time and care to raise, so numbers are limited.

What matters to us
Farming with the land
We use chicken tractors, managed pasture and composted bedding in different parts of the property. Each is part of our approach to building healthier soil and integrating chickens with the orchard. It's a regenerative farming system we're continuing to develop.

Why known-sex options matter
Most backyard keepers are looking for hens, and finding homes for spare roosters can be difficult. That's why I work with breeds and crosses that can sometimes be sexed at hatch. It depends on the parents and the particular hatch, so each listing says whether the chicks are sexed or unsexed.
More variety in our hatches
I also hatch selected fertile eggs from other breeders. It lets me offer chicks and young birds beyond the breeds in my own pens. The mix changes from hatch to hatch, so Gumtree is the best place to see what's here now.

About the farm
Hens in the Hills is our small family chicken breeding project near Monbulk. We use tractors, pasture and composted bedding as we develop an orchard and a system that's good for both the chickens and the soil. I'd love to help more households find a flock they're proud to keep.
